Summit and Swan Lake Loop | September 22-24

The Adventure: Summit and Swan Lake Loop (Adventurous)

The Dates: September 22-24

The Miles: 12 Miles, +2 miles

What to Expect: We meet at 9am in the Sun Oaks Tennis and Fitness Parking lot to sort gear and do initial introductions. From there you will carpool and follow your guide up to the trailhead. From the trailhead we will begin our journey past Summit Lake and then ascend up to Echo Lake. These are the first of several lakes we will be hiking by. We will be staying Friday night at Swan Lake where we can take afternoon dips and cook a hearty dinner. A fall trip in Lassen means mildly warm days and cooler nights making this a perfect combo of dipping into lakes and hot drinks at night. We’ll cozy up with some backcountry cocktails as we plan our adventure for the next day. Saturday brings an off trail adventure opportunity up a seldom travelled cinder cone. At the top is a small hidden lake that we will spend the afternoon at swimming in and enjoying the solitude by. That evening we’ll practice our dinner skills along with baking a well deserved desert! The next morning we’ll pack up and head out, following a section of the PCT through meadows and marshes, rich with wildlife. We’ll finish our trip with another well deserved dip into Summit Lake and cheers to an epic adventure!

Who this trip is for: This is a great trip for beginner backpackers or adventurers  who want to get a little bit of experience traveling off trail. Our hike up to a hidden lake in a cinder cone is a great opportunity to practice topo map reading and route finding in old growth forest. Due to the mileage we recommend this trip for those in good physical condition.

Why we love this trip: This trip is a prime opportunity to experience the fullness of Lassen Volcanic National Park. We get to travel through forest, past lakes, next to meadows, and cross-country up a lesser known cinder cone…and since it’s a loop, we’ll never hike past the same thing twice! The cinder cone adventure makes for a great opportunity to practice and develop your topo map reading and route finding and make no mistake, there’s a fantastic surprise at the top of this hidden cinder cone!

What to bring: Wild Beginnings will provide the following gear and equipment:

  • Tent

  • Sleeping Bag
