Review: Ruffwear Highlands Dog Sleeping Bag

Banner-WendyE

Why Should Humans Have All the Comfort?

We were stoked to hear about the Highlands Sleeping Bag by RuffWear ($100). Who would have thought a dog could actually have a sleeping bag and not just a bed. If you’re traveling in snow or cold weather and your pup doesn’t have the parka of a husky, this sleeping bag is a given. If it wasn’t enough to be a legit sleeping bag, Ruffwear continued to impress us with the specs and features as follows…

Ruffwear Company Profile

Ruffwear is a Oregon based canine company that strives to build the best products for our our adventuring pups. They make gear ranging from dog packs, to jackets, to booties, to harnesses… and everything in between. They make high quality, high performance dog gear so your four legged friend can accompany you on every adventure.

Why This Bag is Serious About Canine Adventures

The Ruffwear Highlands sleeping bag is filled with lightweight synthetic insulation making it just 1lb 10 oz. This bag packs down and stuffs into it’s own stuff sack to fit into any of Ruffwear‘s Palisades Packs. If you’re traveling on hard or cold surfaces such as granite or snow, the sleeping bag is compatible with the Highland’s pad, which easily slips into the built in sleeve of the Highland’s bag. The sleeping bag zips ¾ of the way around leaving a space for your pup to be awake and alert while keeping the rest of him cozy and comfortable. img_6137 img_6165

Testing and Performance

This sleeping bag has lived in our vehicle since day one and as the weather has been getting colder, we’ve been using it more and more. We spend a lot of time trail running and back country skiing all winter so this bag is a huge bonus for Sauvie to warm up in after a long day in the cold. Additionally, we found this is a camping pup’s (and human’s) best friend. img_5859 We took this bag up to 7500ft on Mount Shasta in foreboding weather and camped out in our truck. The Highland’s bag has polyester fabric shell that’s durable and super easy to clean off so we could throw this bag where ever we needed to…like the ground so Mr. Nosy couldn’t get into our food while we cooked dinner on the tailgate. This bag fits perfect in our truck with our human sleeping pads and bags, making it easy to travel with the Roaming Retriever. img_6370

Wrapping Up

While being relatively packable and lightweight, this bag still takes up quite a bit of room in a backpack. Check out the Palisades Pack so your pup can carry their own gear. For our canine intern, the Highlands bag is perfect for daily use as a bed or warmer after a long day in playing in the cold. During winter however, The Ruffwear Highlands Bag is totally worth the space and weight and will accompany us this season on backpacking and camping trips. img_6143
